Event Description
Dear Friends,
I’m writing to invite you to attend Remembering Montreal: A Celebration of Women, an evening of ceremony and performance in response to the negative intentions of Marc Lepine. The event, which will take place on December 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the W.I.S.E. Hall (1882 Adanac St.), will be a holiday fundraiser for the North Shore Single Mothers’ Support Group (sliding scale $5-$25).
The event will begin with a candle-lighting ceremony and dedication led by North Shore Women’s Centre Director Michelle Dodds. The evening’s performances will be interspersed with brief dedications acknowledging influential women throughout history and women significant to the Vancouver community. Performers include singers-songwriters Joanna Chapman-Smith, Carolyna Loveless and Megan Regehr, and poets Vilayvanh Sengsouvanh and Marni Norwich.
The show will run two hours with a ten-minute break. All proceeds including sales of merchandise and a 50/50 draw will go to donations for the mothers’ group. There will also be a box for food donations.
As an organizer, I’m extending this invitation to friends who might enjoy a thoughtful ceremony and special evening. We hope that invitees will leave feeling rejuvenated, having experienced a community moment where people are present for each other with a sense of celebration and honour.
Remembering Montreal lineup:
Joanna Chapman-Smith’s music has been enjoyed across Canada, and overseas as well. She performs in many styles, including Gamelan, Jazz, Folk and Music for Contemporary Dance. Joanna works as a dance accompanist and also recently completed her first full-length CD, "Eyre Corvidae" ("Journey of the Crow Family"), which can be purchased online at http://cdbaby.com/cd/chapmansmith
Carolyna Loveless is a Singer/Songwriter/Musician who has, for 16 years, performed her original music on four continents, opening for Rock Stars, Country Stars and wannabe Pop Princesses. She calls her music Swamp Folk (as well as her indie label www.swampfolk.com ), a melding of Folk/Blues/Canadiana/Country/Americana. Carolyna has 4 Cd's and a DVD, "Live at The Railway Club", that can be found at Swamp Folk Records or on her official site at www.carolyna.com .
Megan Regehr is a young singer-songwriter new to the Vancouver music scene who is turning more than a few heads. She sings her soulful creations in a style that has listeners sinking further into their chairs and breathing deep. Check her myspace page for songs and upcoming shows (www.myspace.com/meganregehr) or just wait to hear more about this exciting, emerging artist.
Vilayvanh Sengsouvanh is a poet with fire and verve. She has a conversational style of spoken word that engages a crowd and a spunky sense of humour that compliments the political nature of her work. A thoughtful and relevant artist, Vilayvanh is a delight to hear.
Marni Norwich is a poet and journalist. Attuned to detail and with an eye to irony, she explores the zaniness, hilarity and turmoil of life. Her poetry has recently been featured at Pandora’s Collective’s First Tuesday Assembly of Poets and on Co-op Radio’s Storytelling Show. Marni's imaginative take on the familiar will delight, surprise and leave you wanting more.
