On Monday, May 5, 2003 Vancouver Island will be blessed with one of the most historic musical performances this Island has ever seen when Enigmatica Entertainment presents the Legendary Skatalites Band from Jamaica; originators of ska, rocksteady and reggae! This will be their first appearance in British Columbia in over ten years! The Legendary Skatalites band have been around since 1962.
The Skatalites appearance marks a very important milestone in Victorias musical community, as the Skatalites are the kind of band that have the power to bring people from a diverse range of musical communities and demographics together. In addition to ska, rocksteady and reggae sounds, their music also covers genres in Latin and jazz. Since the band re-formed in the late 1980s the Skatalites have toured all over the world in almost every continent. Year after year they are invited back by the major festivals and entertainment companies in Europe, Latin America, Canada and the United States.
This show is the official On the Road to Ska Fest 2003 main event. For more information about this years Victoria Ska Festival (4th Annual)please refer to www.victoriaskafest.ca
This show also marks exactly 5 years to the day of the death of Tommy McCook, the Skatalites great tenor saxophone player. Thus, we will recognize Tommy McCook on our advertisements leading up to the show.
Other longtime local ska bands in the community will pay homage to the Skatalites by performing before the big performance. Opening bands include:Revelation Sound (formally the Abolitionists) one of Victorias best rocksteady, dub, reggae bands and a new band that has been created from both the Kiltlifters and the Bloodwarmers called the Those Rapskallions. They will play a special ska/jazz set that will feature sounds from some of the best ska names in North American with a few surprises.

CFUV 101.9FMs Ska, Reggae and Caribbean shows honour THE SKATALITES 1962 2003!
The SKATALITES sound are made from many influences dating all the way back to the mid to late 1950s. SKATALITES band have always maintained a heavy jazz and Latin sound as they were influenced by Big Bands both in the US and Cuba. In the early 1960s, the time of Jamaicas Independence they fused these influences with Jamaicas traditional music mento/calypso. The word SKA named after the sound of the guitar when playing the infectious off beat later became the main beat used in reggae.
Almost all of the early Jamaican reggae and ska singers such as Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Justin Hinds and the Dominoes and Peter Tosh were accompanied by or worked with the SKATALITES on earlier recordings in the 60s with Coxsone Dodd at the legendary Studio One in Jamaica. Many of Bob Marleys early tracks such as Simmer Down and Nice Time were done with the SKATALITES.
Today, many of the riddims used by todays popular conscious dancehall and roots reggae artists such as Buju Banton, were originally created all or in part by the SKATALITES.
